Building Better Athletes

Mock Football Season

With many football players, teams, staffs across the country out of football this year, we've put together a "mock" football season.
This season will be geared towards both players and coaches, with weekly install meetings, video recordings and homework to expand your football knowledge but also challenge traditional football concepts like warm-ups, indy time, team periods, practice design, weekly practice layout, yearly layout, gameday procedures, nutritional interventions, S&C implementation and much more.

No matter where you're at as a player or coach, you'll take a ton away from this 12-15 week "mock" season.

When you sign-up, you'll get 1-2 emails a week with various attachment PPTs, video recordings, homework, readings, feedback and more. This will be like a 3-month clinic to enhance and expand one's knowledge of football and skill development.

Continuing our theme of practice, let’s look at the schedule of a weekly cycle. Slide 1. So the question begs, what is the objective of practice? It should be to put your players in the best position to perform on game day. Slide 2. If you look at the traditional practice week it, in my opinion, leaves much to be desired. From my experience as a player and coach, I don’t think it puts players in the best position to perform at their highest level on game day. From a combination of too much volume, poor CNS progression leading to game day and lack of rest, among others. Slides 3-4. These 2 slides give a little info for the remaining slides. Practice should have different themes: learning & performance. The blue outlines are where practice for learning fits and the red outlines will be where practice for performance will be. Session RPE can be a good guide to practice plans, with the different colors being a guide for where each day of practice should lie. Slides 5-7. Here are 3 examples of what I would deem as better weekly practice plans. I’m not a fan of having a single template to use every week, rather adjusting based off past/upcoming opponents, academic schedule, travel schedule, athlete monitoring, etc. Slides 8-9. I’d highly suggest adjusting practice for back-ups and scout players. Practices are designed around the starters NOT these players so they don’t get the same reps nor exposure and experience as starters, so doing extra practices, scrimmages, lifts for these players can go along ways in their development. Remember these players development will be huge for your program down the road, so don’t neglect it.

These scenarios may only happen 1-2 times during a game, but they are always HUGE plays. A TFL for the defense; a potential big play for the offense. This is why, “just play the game”, isn’t the best answer to improving skilled movement. These players just got 15-20 reps in 10min compared to maybe getting 1-2 throughout the course of a game. So they now have a chance to experience and explore various solutions to this problem and are now better equipped when this problem arises during a game.
